Palm Beach Post TCoast Layoffs One Year Later

TCoast Post 300 holding first annual reunionThe Voluntary Separation Program at The Palm Beach Post hit the Treasure Coast Bureaus (Stuart and Pt. St. Lucie) particularly hard. Virtually all of the long-time employees took advantage of buy-out offers, leaving only about two staffers to cover the two-county area.

In all, about 300 employees left The Post before the end of August 2008. Close to that same number would leave at the end of the year, leaving the newspaper’s staffing about half of what it once was. Another layoff, expected by Sept. 15, was recently announced.

No News TomorrowWhen I was shooting record pictures of the Hurricane Frances damage that peeled the roof off the PSL bureau in 2004, I never dreamed how prescient this picture would become.

T-Coasters held own reunion

The T-Coasters tried as much as possible to stay north of the Palm Beach County line, so, with the exception of former bureau chief Glenn Henderson, none of them showed up at the West Palm Beach staff reunion Wednesday night.

Glenn came south because (A) he was used to interacting with the West Palm Beach office as part of his former job and (B) there was a rumor that Eliot Kleinberg was buying. The latter turned out to be false.

We heard Glenn was buying

Jan Norris and I thought we’d go north to crash the T-Coast party. (A) It would be fun to touch base with folks we’d worked with and (B) there was a rumor that Glenn was buying. The latter turned out to be false.

20 Year ClubOur arrangement was that I’d take pictures and she’d do the writing. She was also responsible for getting the names of all the staffers who hadn’t won their 30-year watches.

(Actually, the company gave us a Rolex or equivalent when we were inducted into the 20 Year Club. Click the 20 Year Club picture to enlarge it. Sally Swartz is Class of ’79 on the lower right.)

As promised, here’s the gallery. Jan tapped Glenn Henderson to fill in names of a few she didn’t know; captions follow the images.

Institutional memory shot

As it was in the main office, you’re looking at hundreds – we repeat: hundreds — of years combined of institutional memory of the area – gone from the local media. That long-term knowledge of a region and its news and newsmakers is one of the biggest victims of media layoffs across the country.

[Editor’s note: the “I” is Ken Steinhoff, former Palm Beach Post and Evening Times staff photographer, director of photography, editorial operations manager, telecommunications manager and a member of the Class of ’72 in the 20 Year Club. He’s usually busy keeping his own blog updated.]

Thanks for recording this for posterity, Ken. It was so nice of you and Jan to drive up to join us.

  • Thanks, Miz Sally, Mam,

It was fun reminiscing about covering the Queen in the Bahamas and talking about covering Okeechobee murders and TCoast serial killers.

And, since Glenn said he was concerned about the pictures I had of him in West Palm Beach always holding a beer, I tried to shoot him without beer ads in the background or a glass in his hand.

Kinda like when I was assigned to shoot pictures in a bar or night club.

I’d stand up on a chair or table and announce in a loud voice, “I’m here to shoot pictures for the newspaper. If there’s anybody here with somebody you should be with, I encourage you to move to THAT corner. I’ll make sure NOT to aim my camera in that direction tonight.”

That saved a lot of relationships and probably saved me from being found cameraless and unconscious in the parking lot.

I couldn’t make the reunions. Hated to miss them. I hope this becomes an annual event.

It’s amazing how quickly we all seemed to go our separate ways this past year. Sad.

Great pictures, Ken! You could make a living doing that. 🙂

  • patcrowley,

    Thanks for the kind words.

I put out a tip jar, but the only tip I got was, “Don’t give up your day job.”

    I don’t HAVE a day job.

Dear TC Gang: It was certainly a privilege to have worked with all of you. Great to see all your smiling faces (and a new little one!) juxtaposed against the pool tables in a smoke-free atmosphere. Best, Spence-

I would have been there, but I was busy checking the beacon on the old Martin County building.

  • Jeff,

Nobody ever did the job you did of checking that aircraft avoidance beacon on the Stuart bureau.

You saved an untold number of lives with your daily diligence.

Glenn was a great bureau chief, but he had a “if they die, they die and I won’t have to pay mileage to cover the story typical management attitude.”

The job was never the same after you left for The Big Time.

I used to work at the Palm Beach Post in the Fort Pierce bureau, from about 1984-87. Weird to see so many faces I recognize in these pictures. Also weird to think you all still aren’t there, covering City Council and County Commission. Hope you are all doing well in your post-Post careers. Hi Sally, Glenn and Jim!
