Q&A Update: Aug. 1

From Jbart:

Q: I applied for the voluntary separation. Do I have to wait until Aug. 11 to bring my signed agreement to HR?
A: No need to wait. Bring the form down at your earliest convenience. In fact, we prefer that if you’ve made your decision, you bring in the signed form as soon as possible. That way we can start on the paperwork.

Q: I applied for the voluntary separation but I’ve changed my mind. What should I do?
A: If you’ve changed your mind, we ask you to go to HR, ask for the yellow application form, and write “REVOKE” on it and sign it again. That too will help avoid paperwork and allow us to update our plans.

Q: I’m planning to take the voluntary program, but I don’t need to have my benefits continued because I’ve made other plans. Can I get my weeks paid out as a lump sum rather than continued weekly payments?
A: Yes. When you bring in the signed agreement, write “LUMP SUM” on it. If you’ve already turned it in, you may go to HR, retrieve it, and write “LUMP SUM” on it now. Just remember that your benefits will end when you take a lump sum.
If you plan to retire, you do not need to write “LUMP SUM” on your agreement.

Q: What about my gear, what do I do with that?
A: Keys, laptops, cell phones, wireless cards, Blackberries, SecureIDs, cameras, home computers, etc., all should be turned in to your supervisor on your last day. We have lists of what’s been assigned to you, and we’ll need to account for everything to get you into the voluntary program. If you have anything still due to PBNI, such as travel advances or personal phone call charges, those also should be settled on your last day.

Q: Can I buy my gear back from the company?
A: No. The company has decided it will not sell any of the equipment.

Q: What about my files?
A: If you have work-related files, please review them with your supervisor and turn in whatever’s useful. If you have personal files in your computer, please transfer them to a disk or thumb-drive and take them home with you before Aug. 11.

Q: What about holiday pay?
A: In most cases, you either had the day off or were paid extra to work already. Discuss with your supervisor any holidays you worked this year for which you did not receive time off or pay for working.

Q: What will happen to my phone extension and email? Should I leave behind a message or extended absence note?
A: Our DP folks will set up voicemail and email for those leaving. We want your regular contacts to continue calling and emailing The Post. So calls will be forwarded to a reporter or editor selected by your supervisor. And emails will be forwarded to an editor for review of newsworthiness.

Q: If I’m voluntarily departing, should I come to work on Aug. 11 and 12?
A: Yes. If you haven’t made other arrangements with your supervisor, then Aug. 11 and 12 are considered normal work days. We’ll expect you to come in and complete your usual assignments.
